Passport and visa photo requirements are oddly specific — the wrong millimeter or the wrong DPI is a real reason for rejection at a passport office. This tool crops and sizes a photo to the exact pixel dimensions your document needs, entirely on your device, and can also lay out multiple copies on a single print-shop-ready sheet.

How to use this tool

Upload a photo, pick your document type (or enter a custom size), then drag the image inside the frame and use the zoom slider until your face is positioned the way you want. Check the box below the frame if you also want a ready-to-print sheet with several copies, then click Create Passport Photo to generate the final file at full print resolution.

Passport photo size standards by country

The built-in presets match the official dimensions most countries publish: 2×2 in (51×51 mm) for the US, 35×45 mm for the UK, the EU/Schengen area and Australia, 50×70 mm for Canada, and 33×48 mm for a Chinese visa. The India preset is the 2×2 in format used for Indian visas, OCI cards and passport applications made through Indian missions in the US; a passport applied for in India (Passport Seva) needs 35×45 mm, so use the UK/EU preset for that. Requirements do change and some countries have additional variants, so if yours isn't listed exactly, use Custom size with the measurements from your country's current official guidance.

💡 Tip: This tool gets the size and framing right, but it doesn't check background color, glasses, or expression rules — always compare your result against your country's official checklist before submitting it.

Framing your face correctly

Most passport rules ask for a front-facing, neutral expression with both eyes open, centered in the frame with your head occupying most of its height — roughly 70-80% in many countries' guidelines. The oval guide over the preview is a rough visual aid for that positioning; drag and zoom until your eyes sit around its upper third and your chin clears the bottom of the guide.

Printing at home vs. a print shop

DPI (dots per inch) is what makes a digital photo print sharp at its real physical size. Photo printers and kiosks typically print at about 300 DPI; the 600 DPI default here gives extra headroom so the file never limits the print. A home inkjet on photo paper can produce an acceptable result, but a pharmacy or print-shop kiosk will generally give a more consistent color result. The print sheet option tiles several copies onto one 4×6 in sheet — the same format most kiosks and mail-order print services accept — so a single print order gives you multiple official copies.

Frequently asked questions

Does this tool guarantee my photo meets official passport requirements?

No — it gets the size and framing right, but rules on background color, glasses, expression and head coverings vary by country and change over time. Always check your country's current photo guidelines (or its official photo checker, if it has one) before submitting.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The photo never leaves your browser — cropping, resizing and print-sheet layout all happen locally using the Canvas API. Nothing is uploaded to a server.

What does DPI mean and why does it matter?

DPI (dots per inch) controls how many pixels are packed into each physical inch when printed. Higher DPI means a sharper print at the photo's real-world size. About 300 DPI is the standard for photo printing; the 600 DPI default here is comfortably above that.

Can I use this for a country that isn't in the preset list?

Yes — choose "Custom size" and enter the exact width, height and DPI from your country's official requirements.

What is the print sheet for?

It tiles multiple copies of your finished photo onto a single 4×6 in sheet — the same format most print shops and pharmacy kiosks produce — so you can print several official copies cheaply in one order.

Can this remove or replace the background?

No — automatic background removal needs AI image segmentation, which this tool doesn't run. For the best result, start from a photo already taken against a plain, evenly lit background.

Will the downloaded file work for an online passport or visa application?

It's sized to the exact pixel dimensions your document requires at the chosen DPI, which covers most digital application uploads. If the application also lists a maximum file size, lowering the DPI reduces the file size while keeping the same physical dimensions.
