"Resize" gets used loosely to mean at least three different things: shrinking a file, cropping a photo, and changing its pixel dimensions. This tool only does the third one โ and understanding that distinction will save you a lot of frustration with upload forms that reject "the wrong size" image.
Pixel dimensions vs. file size
A photo's pixel dimensions (say, 4032ร3024) describe its grid of pixels โ how much detail it holds and how large it can display before looking blurry. Its file size (say, 3.2 MB) describes how much storage it takes up, which depends on both the dimensions and how it's compressed. Resizing changes the dimensions directly, which usually shrinks the file size too โ but if your main goal is a smaller file at the same dimensions, you actually want the Image Compressor instead.
Common sizes you'll actually need
- Website hero image: 1600โ1920px wide is plenty for full-screen banners on most displays.
- Blog or article image: 800โ1200px wide covers virtually every content column width.
- Instagram / Facebook profile picture: 320ร320px minimum, though most platforms recommend uploading at least 512ร512px.
- LinkedIn profile picture: 400ร400px minimum.
- Email header image: 600px wide is the standard safe width across email clients.
- Product photo for an online listing: most marketplaces want at least 1000ร1000px so buyers can zoom in.
If you're not sure, resizing to a slightly larger size than you need is safer than too small โ a browser or app can always display an image smaller than its native size with no quality loss, but displaying it larger than its native size makes it blurry.
Aspect ratio and why locking it matters
Aspect ratio is the relationship between width and height โ a 4:3 photo and a 16:9 photo have very different shapes even scaled to "the same size." When Lock aspect ratio is on, changing the width automatically adjusts the height to match the original proportions, so the photo can't end up stretched or squashed. Turn it off only if you deliberately need to force a photo into a shape it wasn't originally โ which usually means part of it will look distorted.
Making a photo bigger (and why it looks worse)
Shrinking a photo is lossless in terms of information โ you're just discarding detail you didn't need. Enlarging one is the opposite problem: there's no extra detail to recover, so the tool has to invent new pixels by interpolating between existing ones. The result is usually soft or slightly blurry, especially past about 150% of the original size. If you need a genuinely sharp enlargement, there's no substitute for starting from a higher-resolution original.
Frequently asked questions
Will resizing make my file size smaller too?
Usually yes โ fewer pixels generally means a smaller file โ but if your primary goal is the smallest possible file at the current dimensions, use the Image Compressor instead, which is built specifically for that.
What's the difference between resizing and cropping?
Resizing scales the whole image up or down while keeping everything in frame. Cropping cuts away part of the image to change its shape or focus. This tool resizes only โ it won't remove any content from the photo.
Why does percent mode go up to 200%?
Percent mode lets you scale down (below 100%) or up (above 100%). Scaling up beyond 100% works, but as explained above, the result will look softer since it's not adding genuine new detail.
Does resizing change the image format?
No โ a JPG stays a JPG and a PNG stays a PNG. If you also need to change the format, use one of our format converters before or after resizing.
My upload form says "image must be under 2MB" โ should I resize or compress?
Either can work, but compression usually gets you there with less visible quality loss, since it doesn't change how large the photo displays. Try the Image Compressor first, and resize only if the file is still too large after compressing.
