About TheHandyKit
TheHandyKit is a small, growing collection of free browser tools — image and PDF converters plus everyday calculators — built around one rule: your files are processed on your own device and never uploaded to a server.
What TheHandyKit is
Most "convert a file" websites work by uploading your file to their servers, processing it there, and sending the result back. That means your photos, scanned documents, and PDFs — often personal or sensitive — pass through, and are temporarily stored on, a computer you don't control.
TheHandyKit works differently. Every conversion and calculation happens locally in your web browser using standard web technology (the Canvas API, and open-source libraries such as pdf-lib, pdf.js and heic2any loaded directly into the page). When you drop a file into a tool, it is read into your browser's memory, processed there, and offered back to you as a download. It is never transmitted anywhere. You can confirm this by opening your browser's developer tools and watching the network tab while you use any tool, or by disconnecting from the internet after the page has loaded — the tools still work.
Why we built it
We kept needing the same small utilities — convert an iPhone HEIC photo to JPG, shrink an image under an upload limit, merge two PDFs, resize a picture for a passport form, work out a discount or a VAT figure — and kept landing on sites that were slow, buried the tool under ads, required an account, or asked us to upload files we'd rather keep private. TheHandyKit is our attempt at the opposite: each tool does one specific job, loads fast, needs no signup, and keeps your data on your machine.
Who makes it
TheHandyKit is built and maintained by WhoOwn.it, an independent software maker. It is a self-funded project with no outside investors. There is no large team behind it — it is a focused effort to build genuinely useful, honest tools and keep them running.
How it's funded
The free tools are supported by advertising, and by an optional paid tier, TheHandyKit Pro, which removes ads for subscribers. Paying for Pro only ever involves your email address and payment details, handled by our payment processor, Stripe — it never gives us access to the files you process, because those still never leave your browser. Full detail on what data is and isn't involved is in our Privacy Policy.
