Table for six, one bill, and suddenly everyone's doing awkward mental math about who owes what. This calculator handles the tip and the even split in one step — enter the bill, pick a tip percentage, and see exactly what each person owes.

How much should you tip?

Tipping norms vary more than most people realize. In the United States, 15–20% is standard at a full-service restaurant, 15–20% is also common for food delivery (with a few dollars minimum on small orders), and $1–2 per drink is typical at a bar. Many countries handle it completely differently: the UK and much of Europe often add a discretionary 10–12.5% service charge that may already be included in the bill, and in Japan tipping isn't customary at all and can even come across as odd. Check the bill for an existing service charge before adding a tip on top of one.

💡 Tip: When in doubt in the US, 18% is a safe, comfortably-in-the-middle default for adequate service — move up toward 20–25% for great service, or down toward 15% for below-average service.

Splitting a bill evenly vs. by item

The calculator above splits the total — bill plus tip — evenly across everyone, which works well when the group ordered roughly similar amounts. If one person had a $40 steak and another just a salad, an even split can feel unfair. For an itemized split, total up what each person actually ordered, then split only the genuinely shared costs (a shared appetizer, tax, and the tip) evenly across the group and add that share to each person's individual total.

Tipping on the pre-tax or post-tax amount

In the US it's customary to calculate the tip on the subtotal before sales tax, since the tax isn't something the server controls. Tipping on the post-tax total instead makes the tip bigger by the sales-tax rate — on a $100 bill with 8% tax, a 20% tip becomes $21.60 instead of $20 — so it rarely matters much either way; use whichever number you have handy as the "bill" amount above.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

In the US it's customary to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, since the tax isn't something the server controls. Tipping on the post-tax total instead makes the tip bigger by the sales-tax rate (for example $21.60 instead of $20 at 8% tax), so either is fine — use whichever number you have handy as the "bill" amount.

What's a fair or standard tip percentage?

In the US, 15–20% is typical for full-service restaurants and for delivery, and $1–2 per drink at a bar. Many countries outside the US don't expect a separate tip at all, or already include a service charge in the bill — check local custom before assuming US percentages apply.

How do I split a bill unevenly, when people ordered different amounts?

This calculator splits the total evenly across everyone. For an itemized split, add up what each person actually ordered separately, then split only the genuinely shared costs (a shared appetizer, tax, and the tip) evenly among the group.

Does the tool round the total or the per-person share?

Turning on "Round the total up" rounds the grand total up to the next whole currency unit before splitting, so each person pays a clean number rather than a total with odd cents.

Is my bill amount stored or sent anywhere?

No — the whole calculation happens with plain arithmetic in your browser. Nothing you type here is ever sent to a server or saved once you leave the page.

Can I use this for group expenses other than restaurants?

Yes — the math is the same for any shared cost split evenly among a group, like a group gift or a shared cab. Enter the total as the bill amount and set the tip percentage to 0 if there isn't one.
