Every MP3 carries a small block of metadata alongside the audio — its ID3 tag — which is what lets a music player show a proper title and artist instead of just a filename, and what a phone reads to group songs into albums. This tool reads whatever tags a file already has, lets you fix or fill in title, artist, album, year, track, genre, comment and cover art, and writes a fresh tag back in without touching the audio itself.

What ID3 tags actually are

ID3 is a small block of structured data tucked in at the start of an MP3 file, separate from the actual compressed audio. It's what stores the title, artist, album, year, track number, genre, a free-text comment, and — via an embedded image — cover art. Nearly every modern device and app reads the newer ID3v2 format; a smaller, older ID3v1 block at the very end of the file exists for backward compatibility with software from the late 1990s.

How this tool edits them safely

The compressed audio data is never touched. This tool reads the file's existing tag block (if any), lets you edit the fields in a form, and on save it removes the old tag block and writes a brand-new one in its place, followed by the exact same audio bytes the file started with. There's no decoding, re-encoding, or re-compression involved anywhere in the process — the sound is byte-for-byte identical before and after.

💡 Tip: cover art is automatically resized down if it's very large, since most players only ever display album art at a few hundred pixels — there's no benefit to embedding a multi-megabyte image.

Frequently asked questions

What is an ID3 tag?

ID3 is the metadata format MP3 files use to store their title, artist, album, year, track number, genre, comment and cover art — the information your music player or phone reads to show a song's details instead of just a filename.

Will this re-encode or change the sound quality of my MP3?

No. Only the metadata block at the start of the file is replaced — the compressed audio data itself is copied over completely untouched, so there is zero quality loss and no re-encoding.

What image formats work for cover art?

JPG and PNG both work. The image is automatically resized down if it's very large, to keep the finished file size reasonable — most players only display album art at a few hundred pixels anyway.

My MP3 already has tags — will editing overwrite them?

Existing tags are read in and shown pre-filled so you can see and adjust them; saving replaces the old tag block entirely with a fresh one built from whatever is in the form when you click Save, including any fields you left unchanged.

Does this support ID3v1 tags?

Existing tags are read from either ID3v2 (the modern standard nearly everything uses) or a legacy ID3v1 block at the end of the file. Saving always writes a fresh ID3v2.3 tag, which every modern player and phone reads correctly, and drops the file's original ID3v1 block if it had one.

Does this tool upload my MP3 anywhere?

No. Reading, editing and rewriting the tags all happen locally in your browser using the file already on your device — nothing is ever uploaded to a server.
