How to Sign a PDF Without Printing and Scanning It

Print, sign, scan, email โ€” it still happens, but you can skip every step except the signature. This guide covers the practical ways to sign a PDF digitally and what counts as a valid signature.

Three ways to sign a PDF

Is an image signature legally valid?

In many places, yes, for ordinary agreements. In the United States the ESIGN Act and UETA give electronic signatures the same standing as ink ones for most contracts. In the EU, eIDAS recognises a "simple electronic signature" and says it cannot be denied legal effect merely because it is electronic. The UK takes a similar position.

What matters is the intent to sign and that the signature is attached to or associated with the document. That said, some documents typically still need more than an image: wills, some property and family-law documents, and papers that must be notarised. If a specific contract or authority says how it wants to be signed, follow that. This page is general information, not legal advice.

Signing a PDF step by step

  1. Open the PDF in the signing tool. It is rendered page by page so you can see where the signature goes.
  2. Create your signature. Draw it with a mouse, trackpad or finger, or type your name in a handwriting-style font.
  3. Drag it into place on the signature line and resize it so it looks natural next to the printed text.
  4. Repeat on other pages if the document has initial boxes or several signature spots.
  5. Download the signed PDF and check every page before sending.

Making it look good

Why you shouldn't upload contracts to random sites

A contract, offer letter or rental agreement contains names, addresses, salaries and sometimes ID numbers. A signing site that uploads your file stores a copy on its servers, even if only for an hour, and you are trusting its security and retention policy. A browser-based signing tool reads the PDF into your own device's memory, stamps the signature and gives you the finished file. You can check that nothing is sent by watching the network tab in your browser's developer tools while you use it.

Protecting your signature image

A clean signature image is easy to copy from a shared PDF. To limit misuse: don't leave signed copies on public links, add "for [purpose] only, [date]" beside the signature where the document allows it, and send documents through channels you trust. When you no longer need a signed copy, delete it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sign a PDF on my phone?

Yes. Open the tool in your mobile browser, draw with your finger and place the signature. It works on iPhone and Android.

Does the person receiving it need any software?

No. The result is a normal PDF with the signature on the page, viewable in any PDF reader.

Can the signature be edited later?

The signature is part of the page once stamped. Keep your unsigned original if you may need to change something.

Is this the same as a digital certificate signature?

No. It's an image-based electronic signature. It doesn't cryptographically prove the file is unchanged. Use a certificate-based service when the situation requires that.

๐Ÿ›  Try it yourself: the Sign a PDF runs entirely in your browser โ€” nothing you enter or drop in is uploaded.
